West Wind

Nexans helped Meridian achieve effective and reliable connections for 62 Siemens wind turbines installed at the challenging site of Terawhiti Station Makara, west of Wellington.

Project overview

Nexans  supported the development of this major wind farm project, which was commissioned in 2009.

62 turbines located on hilly terrain near Makara (Wellington) with the capacity to generate up to 143 MW of electricity - enough to power 100,000 homes annually. With a 90% generation rate, the hard-working turbines at this farm required a robust and reliable solution.

Nexans supplied MV power cables, fibre optics, overheads, and accessories for the complete cable solution.

Nexans' Key Success Factors

  • Technical consultancy with civil and electrical teams
  • Ability to overcome difficult terrain / site accessibility
  • Limited site storage space required an exacting delivery schedule
  • Unique suite of cable design
  • Aerials for the overhead transmission line
  • Our locality meant reduced wait times and the ability for our sales, technical and engineering teams to conduct site visit's, resulting in a stronger partnership with all involved in the project.
