Harness the earth's natural power
Challenges and expectations
While the opportunities are huge, the risks are too. Uncertainty and structural overcapacities have led to aggressive pricing and competition. Demand for clean generation is driving major OEMs to find new ways to design-to-cost, improve processes, and help owners optimise their assets.
There are also technical challenges; generation using turbines means components are becoming larger to improve energy capture. Just as wind turbine towers become taller to capture stronger airflow, geothermal wells become deeper to harness greater amounts of heat and power, and hydro stations adjust flow to ramp up capacity and maximise generation.
As manufacturers accommodate these evolutionary developments, they must also achieve high reliability standards, while reducing operational intermittency and optimising costs of transportation to sites.
Nexans’ energy transition role
Nexans’ involvement with renewable energy dates back to New Zealand's first hydro-electric plants over 130 years ago. Wind energy in New Zealand emerged in the 1990's, and commercial solar farms are in their infancy. While geothermal is a relatively new form of generation, this source can provide massive energy potential, and is something unique to our geographical location.
Our cable products, design-to manufacture services, and support solutions are helping to provide a seamless power pathway from turbine to grid for all kinds of renewable projects. We are dedicated to helping the industry achieve its clean and sustainable electrification installations.
Customised bespoke solutions
The Kawerau power plant project was developed to supplement power to the local paper mill.
Nexans tendered and supplied a turn-key electrification package and provided continuity in support and refurbishment.
- A suite of LV and MV cables, most utilising tinned copper and tinned aluminium, all made-to-order and manufactured locally in NZ
- Tinned instrumentation and control cables
- Pre-terminated cables and installation componentry supplied as value-add service
- Exacting lengths as per schedule
- Exceeded leadtimes and reduced delivery to site
- Tinned and armoured conductors
- Design to manufacture cables
- Made to order lengths
- Specialist cable testing
- We use a TCO* (Total Cost of Ownership) approach to reduce Levelised Cost of Energy.
- Our productivity pipeline management offer is based on engineering design optimisation, standardisation and modularisation.
- Our One Stop Shop facility reduces your sourcing and operational costs - which are further reduced by our lean manufacturing processes.
